TH: Being from Queens puts you right in the belly of one of the most creative and eclectic cities in the world. How could growing up in a different environment or city shaped your future differently and could you see yourself in the same space if you grew up in a different city?

SC: A lot of my style is inspired by my roots in NYC, we mentioned hip-hop being a huge influence in my life. I’m very fortunate to be in a city that’s the best city in the world. The center of creativity, New York, New York. My inspiration is influenced by everything around me; a lot of my ideas come from living. I have great friends who also inspire me, and I love digging for inspiration on the Internet.

Whether I am riding the subway or surfing the web, the objects that I am drawn to consciously and sometimes subconsciously influence my mood and interests. I cant imagine growing up anywhere else in the world. I am pretty sure I’d be a completely different person.

TH: Who would you say inspired you as a kid growing up and on the flip side who currently inspires you that is more of a newer influence?

SC: As a kid cartoons and illustrations were a huge influence. In the same way I look up to illustrators and other graphic artists today to inspire me. I’ve learned that I’m just a very visual person and that’s the best form of communication for me.

TH: There have always been collaborators in the world of sneakers but your catalog goes much deeper than just sneakers or fashion. If you had to choose just one medium that give you the most personal satisfaction what would it be and why?

SC: I always love pen and ink. It’s my go to weapon for everything since I was a kid. When you’re an artist all you need is a pen and paper and you have the world in your hands.

TH: You can find male collaborators everywhere in the world of sneakers and fashion but finding a woman doing it on the highest level is a different story until now. Do you feel any extra pressure or responsibility since your representing the females out there?

SC: Not at all. I am confident in my capabilities and I think the opportunities given to me are a true blessing and an opportunity to carry myself on behalf of women in the game.

TH: Speaking strictly on the sneaker side of things, how did the partnership with PUMA start and can we expect some future collaborations with any other brands down the line as well?

SC: There are definitely future projects in the works as always. You can stay tuned via social media Twitter/Instagram @esymai for details!

TH: What aspect of life inspires you most and truly gets your creative juices flowing and why?

SC: My inspiration is influenced by everything around me; a lot of my ideas come from living. I have great friends who also inspire me, and I love digging for inspiration on the Internet. Whether I am riding the subway or surfing the web, the objects that I am drawn to consciously and sometimes subconsciously influence my mood and interests.

TH: Pepsi or Coke? SC: Coke

TH: Jay Z or Nas? SC: Meh, no idea anymore, they’re so different compared to how they used to be. I guess I would choose the old Jay-Z.

TH: Pepperoni or Combination? SC: Combination

TH: Dave Chappelle or Eddie Murphy? SC: Chappelle. Ever since Doolittle I cant look at Murphy the same.

TH: Fruity Pebbles or Lucky Charms? SC: Lucky Charms, I only eat the marshmallows though.

TH: Where can everyone find and follow you on social media?

SC: @esymai Twitter and Instagram. Stay tuned!

We want to give a big thanks to Sophia Chang and make sure to stay tuned for more one on one's with the industries most influential and groundbreaking figures pushing the envelope and raising the bar.
